What is Maleic Hydrazide LR & AR Grade?

The abbreviation "AR" means "Analytical Reagent," and it is safe to use for research operations requiring precision, while “LR” Grade chemicals are widely called UNILAB and are primarily used for educational purposes or teaching labs. Purity levels are high.

Maleic Hydrazide is an odorless white solid. It is a pyridazine which is extensively used as a systemic plant growth regulator and as a herbicide. Maleic Hydrazide acts as an inhibitor of synthesising nucleic acids and proteins. It is often known by the brand name “Fazor” and was first identified in the 1980s in the United Kingdom. Maleic hydrazide is used in the agricultural industry despite its known effect as a mutagenic agent as it prevents cell division and inhibits biosynthetic activity.

What are the hazards related to Maleic Hydrazide LR & AR Grade?

In acute toxicity studies, Maleic hydrazide is found to be non-toxic by the oral, dermal and inhalation routes. It has been placed in Toxicity Category IV (the lowest of four levels) for these effects.

It causes slight irritation to the eyes (Toxicity Category III) and skin (Toxicity Category IV) and is not a skin sensitiser.

Maleic hydrazide is prepared industrially by a reaction between water, ethanol, acetic acid and sulphuric acid equal solvent, respectively, by maleic anhydride and hydrazine hydrate under controlled conditions.
