Lead chromate is an inorganic compound occurring as a yellow pigment also known as chrome yellow. It is insoluble in water and emits toxic fumes upon heating. It plays an important part as a widely used colourant and can also occur as a mineral “crocoite”. Lead chromate is known to be a strong oxidising agent. It is a fine chemical chromium metal salt that is used in the production of pigmented products including paints, coatings, and plastics.

Lead Chromate is also used in some pyrotechnics compositions, especially delay compositions, as an oxidiser. The molecular formula for Lead Chromate is (PbCrO₄).

Used as a pigment; Chrome yellow is PbCrO4. Chrome green and chrome red also contain PbCrO4.

Used as a pigment in paints, ceramics, rubber and plastics, and fabric printing.

It can be found in lead acid storage batteries, sheet metals, bearings, solder and piping.

Lead(II) chromate can be produced by treating sodium chromate with lead salts such as lead nitrate or by combining lead oxide with chromic acid.
